5 Ways to Prevent a DNS Leak While Using a VPN
To ensure that your VPN connection does not reveal your real IP address as a result of DNS leak, you must ensure that the VPN connection has a DNS leak prevention feature that leaves no room for your ISP or some other persons spying into your privacy while you are online. There are several ways on how you can prevent a DNS leak but we shall dwell here on 5 of them which are most reliable.
1. Use a VPN service with in-built DNS leak protection Feature: Most VPN services and clients do not have DNS protection even though the vendors claim otherwise. However, there are a few trusted VPN service providers that have in-built DNS protection. They are Torguard, Purevpn, Private Internet Access and Mullvad
2. Get a Static IP: A static IP address can prevent your ISP from snooping into your online activity unlike when your IP is dynamic which may create suspicion or reveal your DNS server. However, static IP addresses comes with a higher price tag from VPN service providers and it is worth buying if you want to ward of suspicion arising from a dynamic IP address that changes each time you connect to the internet or access specific sites.
3. Route DNS Requests: You can route your DNS requests through the public DNS server of Google DNS and Comodo secure DNS. Here are some public DNS srvers you can use on your computer
Google Public DNS
- Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8
- Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4
Open DNS
- Preferred DNS server: 208.67.222.222
- Alternate DNS server: 208.67.222.220
Comodo Secure DNS
- Preferred DNS server: 8.26.56.26
- Alternate DNS server: 8.20.247.20
4. Use VPNCheck Pro Version: The pro version of VPN check comes with a DNS leak fix. When you download the application, run it and install in your computer and make sure that you check the DNS leak fix box.
5. Change DNS Servers: Change your DNS servers to public DNS server. This would mask your VPN’s DNS server even if there are VPN leaks that would prevent your real VPN from your ISP from being revealed. You can do this in your Windows 7 computer by clicking on ‘network and sharing’ in the control panel and clicking on ‘change adapter settings’. This would lead you to ‘network connections’ where you then select the connected network by right clicking on it to show ‘properties’. Click on properties to reveal the connections and highlight ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’. Click on ‘properties’ check ‘Use the following DNS server addresses’. Enter the custom DNS server settings and click Ok. Then restart the system
